I am a substitute for the Louisville schools. Today at a good school with good kids, I gave my fifth graders a handout, Cursive Practice. They not only couldn’t write, they couldn’t read it. (yes, they can print) Some wanted to learn, but others saw no point in learning.
Is handwriting doomed?
My wife taught third grade for years and couldn’t believe it when Indiana decided to do away with cursive instructions. Fortunately, her school left it open as an option, which she took.
Printing is fine but slow and it begs the question , How do you sign your name? Everything can’t be done on computers where you can electronically sign, which to this old fart, makes no sense whatsoever.
The kids told me they can sign their names without learning cursive. (I didn’t argue with them though I would prefer they learn it)
I’m with Steve. I am not a fan of the electronic sig. Scary that kids don’t know cursive. My grandkids don’t know it, either. I wonder if I taught them, and they turned in a paper with cursive writing, would they get a bad grade for it?
As I told Steve, the kids say they can still sign their names. I will have to ask my grandkids.
