The Louisville and Portland Canal was first dug in the 1820s, turning Shippingport into an island. In the 1920s, the canal was widened, years later renamed the McAlpine Locks and Dam. Local folks just call it the Portland Canal. (it runs from about 10th street to 27th street) Stunning night photo by Eric Suddeth is recent. Older photos from the 1920s.
