The remains of the 1850s bridge over the Portland Canal, connecting Louisville with Shippingport Island. Also called the Elm Tree Gardens Bridge—Elm Tree Gardens was an 1820s amusement park and racetrack—on the viewer’s left. Civil War soldiers no doubt used this bridge to have R and R from the war.
