Smith Island (275 people, 9 sq. miles) is in the Chesapeake Bay, about 10 miles off the Maryland coast, though it straddles the Maryland/Virginia line. Many of the settlers were from Cornwall. (my 8th great grandma, Marie Southwood Suddeth was Cornish and settled nearby Jamestown in 1635) They are famous for their Smith Island cakes, 8 to 15 layers filled with buttercream, fudge crushed candy bars. Cooked chocolate frosting.
