To drive the Lumbee Indians out of North Carolina, 75 armed KKK met 500 armed Lumbee near Maxton, North Carolina on January 18, 1958. Shots were fired. 4 Klansmen received minor wounds and the KKK fled. This is known as the Battle of Hayes Pond, a Lumbee holiday. I believe this was the last armed confrontation between an Indian tribe and whites in the USA.
