Donnie (1847-1896) and Bud Pence were neighbors with the James Bros. They all joined Quantrill’s Raiders. After Quantrill was killed, In 1866, the Pence Bros. participated in a Liberty, Missouri bank robbery with the James-Younger gang. The Pence Bros. fled to Chaplin, Kentucky. Donnie married Sarah Isabel Samuels (Reuben Samuels was the James Bros. stepfather, her father Wilson Samuels was the same family) Donnie moved to Samuels Depot (now just Samuels) and was elected county sheriff for 20 years.
