Otto Kretschmer “Silent Otto” was a U-boat captain who sank 47 boats and was Germany’s greatest U-boat commander. He was captured in 1941 but after the war, he remained in the German navy. In 1998, he was on a 50th wedding anniversary PLEASURE boating excursion on the Danube River where he fell to his death. (most U-boat captains didn’t survive the war)[I am not wild about ex-Nazis but this man did campaign for rescuing survivors of torpedoed ships]
