The Chichimeca War was fought from 1550- to 1590. Tired of spending money and burying Spanish soldiers, the Spanish government signed a peace treating, hoping to acculturate the various tribes that made up the Chichimeca confederacy. The Spanish lost—to this day, some 400,000 Chichimeca still live in north-central Mexico, half still non-Christian, few speaking Spanish. (Chichimeca were renowned bowmen)
