Book-lover’s heartbreak. The Maya of the Yucatan Peninsula had libraries filled with folding books of deerskin or bark paper written in Mayan hieroglyphics. Alas, the Conquistadors and Christian missionaries burned the libraries, only 4 codices surviving.
