Goingsnake Massacre
April 15, 1872 a fight broke out in a court in the Goingsnake District of the Cherokee Nation. (now Adair County Oklahoma). Federal Marshals intervened in a murder/assault trial in a dispute originating during the Civil War. 8 Cherokees and 3 Marshals were killed, 10 Cherokees and Marshals wounded. Fight was over Cherokee sovereignty. [Took place at Beck’s Mill]
