American Titanic—April 27, 1865. The sidewheeler steamboat, Sultana, picked up 2,000 Union soldiers in New Orleans. Just past Memphis, her boilers blew, she burned to the water level. The records perished with the boat but about 1,800 died. She was known to have faulty boilers, but some suggest that muddy floodwater in the boilers or Confederate sabotage caused the disaster.
