Oh-see-rah shielded the boy with his body and waited.
Lord of the Caves Part 10
ROOOOAR!
The T-Rex charged, its mouth wide open, drool dribbling out of his mouth and making his tusk-like teeth shine.
A flaming spear soared over Oh-see-rah’s head. He had never seen a spear arc so high or shoot so fast.
Oh-see-rah snatched the boy up just as the spear slammed into the T-Rex’s jaw, feathers bursting into flame.
ROOOOOAR!
The T-Rex jerked his head and knocked the spear away. His feathers smoldered and smoked and stank.
Ee-shee-na held a spear thrower and a second flaming spear. “Save the boy.”
Oh-see-rah carried the boy and set him down inside the paling stakes. The boy just stood there as if stunned.
Smoke still spilling off his jaw feathers, the T-Rex lunged at them. Ee-shee-nah’s eyes never wavered as she hurled her second spear.
Oh-see-rah shoved the boy toward safety and whirled around to save his woman. Though he didn’t have a spear thrower handy, he pulled his obsidian knife out and leapt toward the T-Rex as Ee-shee-nah fell onto her back.
The second spear shot into the T-Rexe’s snout. Oh-see-rah leapt toward the T-Rex.
“No!” screamed Ee-shee-nah as she rose.
The T-Rex halted and shook its head back and forth as the smoking, flaming spear hung inside its snout.
ANNNNNHHHH, the T-Rex screamed in agony.
Oh-see-rah remembered the T-Rex’s swinging tail. He spun around and grabbed Ee-shee-nah’s arm. The T-Rex was pivoting as the fiery spear fell onto the ground and sizzled in the grass and weeds.
Ee-shee-na yelled, “What are you—”
With no time to talk, he threw her over his shoulder and scurried away. The T-Rex’s tail was already slinging around.
The boy stood in the way, gawking at the T-Rex and clapping as if it were a game. Oh-see-rah was of a mind to spank the boy, but the tail was already flying toward them. Oh-see-rah scooped up the boy and raced inside.
The mouth of the cave was dark since the T-Rex and its tail blotted out daylight. It seemed as if the T-Rex was about to swallow the cave in one bite.
“Put me down!” squalled the boy as he kicked back and forth, one of his knees digging into Oh-see-rah’s ribs.
Oh-see-rah’s back arched from the weight he bore as he braced himself for the tail’s impact. He put on a last burst of speed and dropped the boy and Ee-shee-nah away from harm’s heartless jaws.
The tail slammed into Oh-see-rah’s back.
