What’s in a name? Indians considered the Ohio and Allegheny Rivers as one river. One explanation for the name Allegheny is from the Delaware tribe’s name for the Cherokee, Allegewi, as they lived along the river. (Cherokees call themselves Tsalagi). Thus, the Ohio River was the Cherokee River. Then the Iroquois entered the region. They renamed it Ohio, Good River. They Cherokee had moved south, the name stuck.
