Bear River Massacre: On January 29, 1863 in Franklin County, Idaho, Union Army troops—California Volunteers—attacked a Shoshone encampment that included women and children during heavy snow. The Shoshone anticipated negotiations, so they didn’t retreat. The army attacked and was losing until the Shoshone ran out of ammunition. Including women and children, about 160 died, another 250 wounded or captured. Army had 67 dead and wounded.
