(disturbing images)
December 29, 1890, Wounded Knee Creek, Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, the US 7th Cavalry opened fire with rifles and cannons on a camp of Lakota Sioux who were mostly disarmed. Numbers vary but about 100 men and 200 women and children were murdered, many others wounded. It is widely believed this was in retaliation for Custer’s 1876 defeat. My heart weeps.
