Cherokee Chief Red Bird Totsuwa ᏙᏧᏩ was murdered along the Red Bird River in the 1790s.
Red Bird River Petroglyphs are across the river from the Red Bird River Shelter Petroglyphs (where Chief Red Bird is buried). The petroglyphs have been attributed to Chief Red Bird and contain Cherokee symbols and other symbols. Sequoyah visited here around 1820 and left some Cherokee syllabary characters.
