Cahokia was a Mississippian temple mound center from 500 AD to 1350 near what is now East St. Louis, Illinois. So many chunkey artifacts have been found that some argue that chunkey originated in Cahokia.
Chunkey was played by one person rolling a stone chunkey dish shaped like a wheel. Players hurled wood-tipped spears at it. Similar to horseshoes, players got points for getting the closest. Notice the funny hats and huge earrings. In the 19 century, Indians quit playing it, likely because the spears made the military nervous. In recent years, Indians have regained interest in chunkey.
