In 1542, Hernando de Soto invaded the southeastern United States looking for gold and the Pacific Ocean. He found neither one. He followed the Tennessee River and later crossed the Mississippi River and died of fever in the Indian town.

Some folks believe he remained on the Tennessee River and crossed the Ohio River where Angel Mounds is located (Evansville, Indiana). The Ohio River is wider than the upper Mississippi, so he may have confused the 2 rivers. I took my sons here a few years ago. Worth a visit.
