Oaks Day

The Kentucky Oaks AKA Run for the Lilies should be held today, Friday, May 1st, but a scourge has descended upon our land. This year it will still be at Churchill Downs, but on Friday, September 4. 3-year-old fillies will race—only the Kentucky Derby has better attendance.

Thurby is the Thursday before Derby. The day when the homefolks (everyone else welcome too) enjoy Churchill Downs. It should have been today, April 30. Alas, COVID-19 has turned loose the apocalypse. This year, Thurby will be held Thursday, September 3, Churchill Downs.

The Thursday before Derby at Churchill Downs is Thurby. (May 2, 2019) If you want to meet locals, come to the Thurby. Derby and Oaks Day, locals are hard to find at the track. It has bands, Derby food, and Official Thurby Cocktail: The Old Forester Old Fashioned (Old fashioned is a Louisville original). And it will be live via NBC. This year it is Thurby Goes Gonzo 2019, with an art show to celebrate Louisville native Hunter S. Thompson and Groundbreaking Illustrator Ralph Steadman. Featured races are the Unbridled Sidney Stakes & Opening Verse Overnight Stakes.
