Doughnuts are old!

They have been around for at least 200 years, but ca. 1850 they were popular on sailing ships. My son, Eric Suddeth, works on Ohio River towboats. Some cooks still make them. A New Orleans cook, Joe LeBeau, lived in Louisville and worked as a towboat/steamboat cook. He retired to Paducah and started a doughnut shop. He sold his recipe to Krispy Kreme. When I was a baby, Dad had a Southern Kreme (Krispy Kreme franchise) in Charlestown Indiana. A grease fire bankrupted him.
