Anchors aweigh!

This house belonged to my great-grandfather, Alonzo Pait, in Shawneetown Illinois, close to the river. About 1900 an Ohio River flood almost carried the house off. Alonzo attached a steamboat anchor to the rear of the house to keep it from floating away. It survived the 1937 flood and was torn down about 1980. Rose Island was a resort/amusement park on the Indiana side of the Ohio River, about 15 miles upriver from Louisville. The 1937 flood destroyed it, and it is now part of Charlestown State Park. One photo shows a piano frame from a piano ruined in the flood.
