Anchors aweigh!

This house belonged to my great-grandfather, Alonzo Pait, in Shawneetown Illinois, close to the river. About 1900 an Ohio River flood almost carried the house off. Alonzo attached a steamboat anchor to the rear of the house to keep it from floating away. It survived the 1937 flood and was torn down about 1980. Historic Home Place

This is the home I lived in as a baby. Bull Creek is to the viewer’s right. Behind the house, the farm ran to the Ohio River. (mules etc.) The river was fordable on horseback–Shawnee on horseback used to cross here to raid Kentucky. A 1790 blockhouse to prevent Shawnee raids was built here.  (Eric Suddeth photo)

This is the remains of a stairway leading to the hotel on Rose Island Amusement Park. An Ohio River flood in 1937 destroyed the island.
