June 19 is Juneteenth, originally the announced date of the freedom of Texas slaves in 1865, but it is now celebrated nationwide. (if my memory is correct, December 31, 1865 is the date for Kentucky slaves) As slaves did not receive freedom on July 4th, 1776, many African-Americans consider Juneteenth as Independence Day.

I added some 1930’s WPA photos of former slaves. These would have been the original people to celebrate Juneteenth. I used to avoid photos of ex-slaves as too painful, but their lives were just as important as anyone else’s.
