SOULING is an old custom in the British Isles and Portugal where children and even adults sing soul cake songs and beg for fruit and Soul cakes (soulmass cakes). This was perhaps an older version of trick-or-treating.

Recipe: cup sugar, 4 cups flour, 2 eggs, cup butter, spices—nutmeg/ cinnamon/ginger/allspice, raisins/currants, milk. These are the size of scones but with a cross on top.

Song:

Soul, Soul, a soul cake!
I pray thee, good missus, a soul cake!
One for Peter, two for Paul,
three for Him what made us all!
Soul Cake, soul cake, please good missus, a soul cake.
An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry, any good thing to make us all merry.
One for Peter, two for Paul, & three for Him who made us all
