Who was Sappho? She lived around 600 BC, born on the Greek island of Lesbos, later exiled to Sicily. She wrote lyric poetry that was accompanied by a lyre, stringed instrument, and may been sung. Questions about her sexuality remain unanswered. Some think she was lesbian; others maintain she was a feminist, leader/teacher of women. The true story may be complicated.
