Sand Creek Massacre: November 29, 1864, 700 Colorado cavalry commanded by a Methodist minister surrounded a reservation camp of 200 Cheyenne and Arapaho men, women, and children. The Indians surrendered with a white flag. The cavalry let loose with cannon and rifle fire. Later, they mutilated bodies and executed the wounded. The army suffered 76 casualties, many because of drunken friendly fire. It is now a National Historic Site.
